1. Women Food and God: An Unexpected Path to Almost Everything by Geneen Roth
If you have tried several diets and lost weight, regained weight or struggled with maintaining a healthy weight, you would likely agree with this book’s position that the diet industry has us hooked. Geneen Roth believes that the truth of most eating problems goes deep into how we soothe ourselves. You can know all the right things to do and healthy foods to eat, but if you are still eating for emotional comfort, you will not be able to lose weight from a healthy place or maintain that weight for a lifetime. This is the best book I have read to learn how to transform this pattern of emotional eating. I recommend it for men, too!
2. The Eat Clean Diet Recharged by Tosca Reno
This is one of the best “how to” books out there. No fad diet strategies, no calorie counting and no artificial low-cal/low-fat junk food. Instead, this book focuses on how to eat wholesome, healthy and delicious foods in the right portions. What I especially like are the “cooler plans,” which help you organize your eating strategies so you learn how to make this way of eating a permanent lifestyle.
3. The End of Overeating by David Kessler, MD
This book is both inspiring and full of good advice. David A. Kessler, who served as commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration under Presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton, examines how the food industry has manipulated the American public to over-consume food. He offers some practical solutions to resist the triggers that make us overeat and this book is a great read to become more aware of how food manufacturers manipulate us into over consumption.
