Adequate Amounts of Vitamin D Needed to Reduce Risk of Falls

In 2009 a review study was published in the British Medical Journal examining the effects of oral vitamin D supplementation on risk of falls among older people. Doses of vitamin D between 700 and 1000 IU/d were found to reduce the risk of falls by 23%, while doses below 700 IU/d were “NOT” found to exert a protective effect. Data from 2,426 subjects, were included in the analysis. These results suggest that the existing recommendations for dosing of vitamin D are insufficient to reduce the risk of falls; higher doses of vitamin D3 at 1000IU to 2000IU per day may be needed to reduce the risk of falls in the elderly.
