Newletter article continued. ......

Over time, toxins accumulate in all our tissues and large amounts are deposited in our fat stores. When we go on a weight loss diet and begin to lose fat, these chemicals are released and blood levels increase. In essence, the toxins will then be redistributed if our body cannot process and eliminate them, causing us to feel worse and our metabolism to slow further.

There may be a mechanism by which the body protects itself against this further assault, triggering the urge to eat large quantities to stop further weight loss and toxic assault. The result is another failed weight loss attempt.

To reverse this process, we must reduce the toxins going into our bodies and then systematically reduce those that are stored in our tissues.  Then, specific nutrients can be used to restore damaged mitochondrial function and support hormone balance.

A well-planned detoxification program is a good start. Unfortunately, many "fasts" or "cleanses" marketed on the internet or in health food store may be dangerous, allowing the release of toxins from cells without the proper support for elimination. Some of these programs are simply laxative blends that do nothing more than cause an increase in bowel movements.

Before starting a weight loss or detoxification program, we recommend a thorough evaluation and work up with your naturopathic physician. Nutrient levels can be tested to make sure you have the basic building blocks necessary to detoxify chemicals and provide energy. In addition, the physician can review your medications, as weight loss and detoxification can affect how your liver metabolizes some prescriptions.

Once you have met with your physician, you may want to enroll in our physician-led detoxification program to support your progress. Our cleansing program teaches you how to reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals and the fundamentals of healthy eating. In the program, you will use diet, lifestyle and supplements to reduce the toxic burden you have accumulated. You can incorporate these strategies that you learn into your ongoing weight loss program.

Many who have participated in the program report that cravings for sweets and unhealthy foods disappear. They have increased energy, more balanced emotions and chronic symptoms such as congestion, bloating and constipation disappear.

Our next detox program starts September 19th. Please call the center for more information or to sign up.
